Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is dealing with lingering discomfort in his surgically repaired left shoulder, casting doubt on his availability for the start of the 2025 MLB season.
Ohtani underwent arthroscopic surgery in November to repair a torn labrum, and at the time, our Pro Docs projected that he would not be ready for Spring Training. The two-way sensation acknowledged the challenges of his rehab process, saying:
"I've gone through it with the elbow before, and with the shoulder, it's a little bit more complicated. I do believe that's the part that I have to be patient."
Despite the setback, Ohtani remains determined to take the field as the Dodgers’ Opening Day designated hitter when the team faces off in Tokyo, Japan, on March 18. However, given the quick turnaround, our Pro Docs believe his availability for Spring Training—and even Opening Day—is in serious doubt.
While he recovers from shoulder surgery, Ohtani is also ramping up his preparation to resume pitching in 2025. The two-time MVP did not pitch in 2024 after undergoing his second Tommy John surgery in 2023. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed that the team has no plans for Ohtani to pitch in Spring Training, but he is expected to throw simulated games sometime in April before taking the mound in live action.
As the Dodgers gear up for their highly anticipated season, Ohtani’s recovery remains a crucial storyline, with fans and analysts closely monitoring his progress.
