7 Biggest MLB Injury Insights This Week

Manny Machado - SIC score 59

Further imaging revealed a fracture in his left hand after he was hit by a fastball May 15. Likely a nondisplaced hairline fracture and return will be based on stability and pain tolerance.

Chance to avoid 10-day IL stint but a return this weekend against Boston would be heroic.

Machado has not been placed on IL since 2014 and is not inclined to end that streak with the Padres offense currently struggling.

Dustin May - SIC score 23

Left Wednesday’s start after 16 pitches and was diagnosed with a flexor pronator strain. Will not require second Tommy John procedure as UCL is reportedly intact. Will hit IL but the question is 15-day or 60-day.

Manager Dave Roberts said May would miss at least a month.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. - SIC score 63

By video, did not suffer ligament damage when fielding a bunt on Tuesday night. MRI came back clean, meaning he should avoid IL and could return to the lineup this weekend.

Previous right knee issues suggest he’s likely dealing with patellar tendinitis, which needs to be managed for him to avoid swelling.

Cody Bellinger - SIC score 74

Injured on a spectacular catch at the center field wall on Monday. By video, suffered left knee hyperextension but appears to have avoided bone bruise.

Reportedly hit in cage Wednesday and should be available Friday, likely as DH or off the bench.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. - SIC score 12

Suffered a right turf toe injury while trying to catch a ball near the center field wall in Miami. His cleat stuck in the chain link fence, causing the turf toe injury.

Chisholm was placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to Saturday (May 13), but manager Skip Schumacher said he will miss between 4-to-6 weeks.

He’s unlikely to require surgery, but his loss leaves a big hole in center field for the Marlins.

Carlos Rodón - SIC score 34

The Yankees’ expensive new signing is reportedly dealing with a “chronic” back injury that has kept him from throwing. At this point, the best case scenario would be a return by the All-Star break, as our Pro Baseball Docs detailed here.

Jose Altuve - SIC score 81

Altuve’s return is imminent, as he has wrapped up his rehab assignment and is back with the team in Houston. The Astros have been non-committal about his actual return date, but it could come as soon as Friday against Oakland.

The 33-year-old has been out since he suffered a broken right thumb in the World Baseball Classic in mid-March. Without him in the lineup, the Astros went 23-19 and rank 17th in runs scored.
