Phillies Injury Report: Bryce Harper Gets Pins Placed, Jean Segura Gets Pins Removed

The Phillies heard from each of their sidelined stars after major milestones in their rehab from fractured fingers.

Bryce Harper Injury Update

Bryce Harper told reporters that he is intending on returning this season but wouldn't give a return timeline in his first media availability since undergoing surgery to repair his left thumb fracture.

He suffered the injury when he was hit by an errant fastball from Blake Snell on June 25 and had his thumb surgically repaired on June 29.

Harper reportedly had three pins put into his thumb, which suffered a comminuted fracture that misplaced multiple fragments of his metacarpal bone.

The ProBaseballDocs continue to assert that Harper will miss six-to-eight weeks while rehabbing his left thumb and likely return in mid-August.

He has yet to be transferred to the 60-day IL, a move that would extend that timetable.

If the procedure was successful and the pins stay, Harper's recovery will be stronger than if he took a non-surgical approach.

The defending NL MVP has been stellar at the plate while playing through a torn UCL in his right elbow, batting .318 with a .985 OPS, 15 home runs, 21 doubles, and 48 RBI in 242 at-bats.

Jean Segura Injury Update

The Phillies' starting second baseman, meanwhile, had the pins that were placed in his fractured right index finger one month ago removed on Tuesday.

He was captured by Tim Kelly of Phillies Nation taking grounders but has reportedly yet to advance to throwing with his injured right hand.

Philadelphia initially placed placed the 32-year-old all-star on the 60-day IL and gave him a 10-to-12 week recovery timeline, but interim Manager Rob Thomson said on Tuesday there is no timetable for Segura's return.

Joe Girardi was the manager of the Phillies when Segura suffered the injury on June 1 and was fired two days later.

Segura is batting .275 with six bombs, 22 runs, and 19 RBI while anchoring the middle of the Phillies' defensive infield.

The pin is out of Jean Segura’s fractured right index finger. He’s taking some grounders at second, but not throwing with the right hand yet. There isn’t a timetable on when he could return.
