Wrist Injury Likely to Keep Pete Alonso Out of Home Run Derby

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is unlikely to compete in the Home Run Derby this season because he’s recovering from a left wrist injury he suffered last week, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.

Alonso was diagnosed with a bone bruise and a wrist sprain, according to the Mets. A recent picture revealed that he is likely dealing with pain/swelling on the ulnar side of his wrist, evident by the bulky brace he was wearing that went all the way up his arm.

His hit by pitch did not result in a fracture, but Alonso is currently on the 10-day IL and expected to miss at least the next three weeks.

With the Home Run Derby set to take place on Monday, July 10, Alonso will likely not be back with the Mets by then.

Even if he is, the team is unlikely to risk any further stress that would come with participating in the running clock format Home Run Derby.

Alonso, who led the MLB in home runs with 22 when he was injured, won the 2021 Home Run Derby and lost in the semifinals last year.

Unfortunately, this wrist injury will rob him of the chance to compete this year.

New York Mets 2023 World Series Odds

Alonso’s durability this season will be the Mets primary focus. They are currently 31-35 and sit 9 games back from the Braves in the NL East.

New York is +3000 to win the title and +3000 to win the NL East, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
