The Red Sox placed star second baseman Trevor Story on the 10-day IL with a right hand contusion.
Story was hit by a Corey Kluber pitch on the top of his right hand on Tuesday and x-rays came back negative for a fracture.
The swelling and discomfort has reportedly been enough of an issue for Boston to elect to sideline Story until the second half of the season.
The slugger has had an up-and-down season, batting .221 with 15 home runs, 58 RBI, and 10 stolen bases in 307 at-bats.
Story is one of seven Boston hitters to play in at least 80 games this season.
