Top MLB Injury Insights of the Week

Ronald Acuña Jr. - SIC score 89

The flashy Braves’ right fielder suffered a left elbow contusion on a hit by pitch that caused him to leave Tuesday’s game. X-rays on Acuña’s elbow came back negative and he will return to the lineup Wednesday night without issue.

Brandon Marsh - SIC score 45

The Phillies’ center fielder suffered a left knee contusion and was placed on the 10-day IL on Sunday. He will reportedly miss 2-3 weeks, putting a potential return in mid-to-late August. Jake Cave will likely see more time in centerfield with Marsh out.

Tim Anderson - SIC score 84

Jose Ramirez’s boxing mate suffered a forearm contusion when he was hit by a Gerrit Cole fastball on Monday night. He was out of the lineup Tuesday and it remains to be seen if he’ll rejoin the lineup before serving his six-game suspension. Either way his arm is unlikely to be an issue beyond his suspension.

Shane McClanahan - SIC score 0

Manager Kevin Cash revealed Tuesday that McClanahan is “highly unlikely” to pitch again this season for the Rays. The loss of the hard-throwing lefty marks the third starting pitcher Tampa Bay has lost to injury this season. Drew Rasmussen and Jeffery Springs are on IL after undergoing Tommy John surgeries and it would be surprising to see McClanahan’s dreaded forearm tightness turn out any different.

Trevor Story - SIC score 91

Boston’s shortstop was activated off the 60-day IL on Tuesday and played in his first game in nearly 11 months. Story went 0-4 with three strikeouts, but his elbow will not be a concern going forward. Red Sox manager Alex Cora may get him a few more off days early on to help with the rust, but they are likely all-in for the playoff push.

Josh Jung - SIC score 14

Jung will undergo surgery on his broken left thumb and miss at least the next six weeks. The Rangers’ third baseman suffered the injury on a hard-hit ball off the bat of Jorge Soler. Correy Seager recently returned at shortstop but now Texas will have to figure out who's playing third base for the stretch run.
