Royals Injury Report: Salvador Perez Placed On 10-Day IL With Left Thumb Sprain

The Royals removed Salvador Perez from game one of Tuesday's doubleheader with the White Sox with an apparent left thumb sprain.

Salvador Perez Injury Update

The Royals placed Perez on the 10-day IL in between the two contests. It is unknown the extent of the injury or what tests he has undergone at the time of the placement.

Perez appeared to suffer the sprain on an aggressive swinging strike in the first inning. The 32-year-old grimaced and shook his left hand after striking out, but stayed in the game for two more at-bats.

He went 1-3 on the day before being pinch-hit for by Carlos Santana with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.

Perez, Kansas City's everyday catcher, was batting third and playing DH in game one and would presumably have gone behind the plate for the nightcap.

Perez struggled to open the season but was batting .279 with seven RBI since May 8. He leads the Royals with six home runs and has played in all 34 games thus far for 12-22 Kansas City.

The Royals' backup catcher, Cam Gallagher, is on the 10-day IL with a grade two hamstring strain he suffered on May 1.

Kansas City will turn to 23-year-old rookie MJ Melendez if Perez misses time. Melendez started on Tuesday and is batting .222 with one RBI in 27 at-bats. He has also committed two errors in eight starts at catcher.
