Rays Injury Report: Wander Franco Heads To IL With Quad Injury

The Rays placed start shortstop Wander Franco on the 10-day IL Tuesday after he left the previous night's game with a lingering right quad injury.

Wander Franco Injury Update

Franco's quad tightness first popped up on April 18, but he has missed just two games since then.

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash told reporters after Monday's game that Franco felt a “slight tug” in his quad after rounding first base on a single.

Franco also experience right quad tightness on May 20 and was held out of the lineup. At the time, Cash said “every part of both legs” hurts on Franco and attributed some of the soreness to playing on Tropicana's artificial turf.

The Pro Baseball Docs have had Franco's lingering quad tightness on the radar for most of the season.

A short shut down for Franco makes sense to get his quad right and he could get a PRP injection to promote healing, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.

A PRP injection would likely keep him out beyond the minimum 10 days.

After hitting .331 from April 8-May 9, Franco hit .057 in 35 at bats from May 10-22.

He's picked up his production the past week and is now hitting .270 with 4 home runs and 19 RBIs.

The 21-year-old will hit the IL for the second time in his short career. He suffered a right hamstring strain early last September, but returned after a short absence.

Taylor Walls is in at shortstop today and will likely man the position until Franco is back.

Walls is hitting .149 with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs in 41 games this season.
