Rays Injury Report: Brandon Lowe Out Into June With Back Injury

After being placed on the 10-day IL, Rays' second baseman Brandon Lowe is expected to miss a month or more with a stress reaction in his lower back.

Brandon Lowe Injury Update

The Rays put Lowe on the IL on Tuesday, but the 27-year-old said he had been struggling with back tightness since spring training.

When the issue got worse, according to The Tampa Bay Times, he visited a specialist who discovered the stress reaction.

Lowe will be shut down for three weeks to allow his back to heal before being re-evaluated.

Immobilization is key for stress reactions, as they can easily develop into stress fractures that require surgery, likely ending his season.

The second baseman has struggled this season after a breakout 2021 campaign. Lowe is batting .212 with a team-high five home runs, 20 runs, and 12 RBI, but was finding a groove this month, notching seven extra-base hits on a .993 OPS.

Rookie 24-year-old Vidal Brujan is expected to see the lion's share of starts in Lowe's absence, joining his fellow young infielder Wander Franco. Brujan is 3-27 with one RBI this season.
