Outfielder Wil Myers, who holds a current SIC health score of 13, has been placed on IL due to what the Padres released as knee inflammation.
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Tribune has reported, however, that the issue “may require arthroscopic surgery to clean up a loose cartilage flap behind the patellar tendon of his right knee.”
Our team of Pro Baseball Docs at sicscore.com with multiple decades of MLB experience concur with the report from Acee. Myers will need more than 10 days on the IL because the loose cartilage flap will not heal on its own meaning surgery is a forgone conclusion.
The scope will clean up the loose flap of cartilage which is hinged to the knee causing the bothersome inflammation. The scope will push his recovery to roughly a month which means the Padres will be without their right fielder till at least the beginning of July.
The surgery is a must for the outfielder as it will allow him to return within the season instead of allowing the injury to hamper and linger him throughout.
With the All-Star break looming two weeks after a potential return date, the Padres could be cautious and sit Myers till after the break and when he does return, will sport a lowly SIC score of 71.
The former Tampa Bay Ray has reported feeling tremendous pain when moving side to side on top of stopping and starting while running, which coincides with the type of injury he is dealing with. The patellar surface is part of the extensor mechanism including the quad which is a responsible for how a ball player accelerates and decelerates his motion.
Myers is added to the list of key position players on the IL that includes star SS Fernando Tatis and, although the outfielder is being placed much later, we expect him to return before the elite shortstop.
See below a visual representation on how the injury will affect the Padres outfield.
