Opening Day has come and gone, but several notable MLB players are already dealing with injuries that could shape the early part of the season. From stars recovering from surgery to key contributors sidelined by new setbacks, here’s a quick look at the latest injury updates from around the league and what they could mean moving forward.
Jacob deGrom - Texas Rangers
deGrom said Sunday that his neck is feeling “much better” after he was scratched from Saturday’s start because of stiffness. deGrom will make his season debut on Tuesday.
Jackson Holliday - Baltimore Orioles
Holliday was not in the Orioles’ Opening Day lineup, but he began a rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Norfolk. The infielder went 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts while playing seven innings at second base, and he could return as soon as Wednesday when he becomes eligible to come off the injured list.
Seiya Suzuki - Chicago Cubs
Suzuki is nearing a return from the knee injury he suffered during the World Baseball Classic, according to Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Although Suzuki is eligible to come off the injured list this weekend, he is expected to head to Double-A or Triple-A first to get some at-bats before being activated.
J.P. Crawford - Seattle Mariners
Crawford has begun a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma as he works back from right shoulder inflammation. The Mariners shortstop opened the season on the 10-day injured list after the issue limited him to just seven spring training games.
Jackson Chourio - Milwaukee Brewers
Chourio began the season on the injured list with a fractured left hand after an MRI revealed a slight fracture. The Brewers’ early expectation is that he will miss about 2-4 weeks, with the hope he can return before the end of April.
Zach Eflin - Baltimore Orioles
Eflin was pulled abruptly from Tuesday night’s start against the Rangers because of right elbow discomfort. Before exiting, Eflin had struck out seven and allowed just one run over 3 2/3 innings.
Cody Ponce - Toronto Blue Jays
Ponce is expected to miss significant time after suffering a right knee injury in Monday’s loss to the Rockies. He was placed on the 15-day injured list, and while the current diagnosis is a sprained right ACL, doctors are still reviewing the MRI to determine whether there is a tear.
Andrew Vaughn - Milwaukee Brewers
Vaughn fractured the hamate bone in his left hand on Opening Day and will need surgery, the team announced Saturday.
Christopher Morel - Miami Marlins
Morel was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, after suffering a left oblique strain during batting practice before Opening Day. The Marlins expect Morel to miss 4-6 weeks.
Yu Darvish - San Diego Padres
Darvish will miss the 2026 season while recovering from right elbow surgery and is currently on the Padres’ restricted list. The Padres say he wants to rehab on his own timeline, and there is no firm timetable for any change in status.
Mickey Moniak - Colorado Rockies
Moniak opened the season on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right ring finger after hurting it while diving back into first base in an exhibition game. The IL move was retroactive to March 24, and Moniak said he hopes to be ready for the Rockies’ home opener on April 3.
