Several notable MLB players are dealing with injuries as the 2026 season moves through August, with teams managing everything from new setbacks to ongoing rehabilitation and potential returns from the injured list. Here's the latest MLB injury news, IL updates and expected return timelines for key players around the league.
Friday, August 14th
Jacob deGrom, Rangers - Right Triceps
deGrom exited Thursday night's start against the Angels after two innings due to right triceps fatigue. He said the triceps tightened during the second inning and would not loosen up, prompting Texas to remove him rather than risk further injury. deGrom said he is not overly concerned and hopes to make his next start, but he is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the severity of the issue.
Brice Turang, Brewers - Left Knee
Turang was held out of Thursday night's series opener against the Dodgers due to left knee pain that he has been dealing with for some time. An MRI did not reveal anything considered serious, and manager Pat Murphy said the issue does not currently appear to require surgery. Turang is considered day-to-day.
Max Meyer, Marlins - Neck/Side
Meyer received a cortisone injection in his side/rib area as he continues to deal with discomfort related to the neck strain that has sidelined him since July 19. The Marlins initially shut him down from throwing for two weeks before a follow-up examination led to the injection. Miami will monitor how Meyer responds over the next few days before determining when he can resume his throwing progression.
Thursday, August 13th
Hunter Greene, Reds - Right UCL
Greene will miss the remainder of the 2026 season and potentially all of 2027 after undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair the damaged UCL in his right elbow. This marks the second Tommy John procedure of Greene's career after previously undergoing the surgery in 2019 while in the minor leagues.
Freddie Freeman, Dodgers - Total Body Soreness
Freeman is considered day-to-day after taking a frightening fall down the stairs and into the visitors' dugout while attempting to catch a foul popup Wednesday. Freeman avoided hitting his head and does not appear to have suffered a serious injury, but reported soreness in his knees, shoulder, hand and wrist afterward.
Byron Buxton, Twins - Right Hip
Buxton has been activated from the injured list after missing 14 games with a right hip impingement and will return for Thursday night's Field of Dreams game against the Phillies. Buxton previously missed nine games with the same hip issue before returning on July 20, only to aggravate it again a week later. After another stint on the IL, Buxton has progressed through running and hitting work without another reported setback and is now cleared to return to the Twins' lineup.
Wednesday, August 12th
Nick Kurtz, A's - Right Thumb
Kurtz received a PRP injection on Aug. 4 and is required to remain in a brace with no mobility for four weeks. Manager Mark Kotsay acknowledged that the recovery timeline could make it difficult for Kurtz to ramp back up before the end of September. Kurtz initially landed on the injured list with a sprained right thumb in July and struggled after returning, going 1-for-18 over seven games. While the Athletics have not officially ruled him out for the season, a 2026 return appears unlikely.
Bryce Harper, Phillies - Left Knee
Harper is playing through left knee soreness that has resurfaced since his return to right field. Harper initially injured the knee while sliding into second base on July 11, and the discomfort improved following the All-Star break before returning as he increased his workload in the outfield. Harper said the soreness is primarily triggered by sudden stops and movements defensively and does not affect him while hitting or running at full speed.
Jose Altuve, Astros - Left Foot
Altuve is out of the Astros' lineup Wednesday after being hit by a pitch on his left foot during Tuesday night's game against the Giants. Initial imaging showed no fracture, but Altuve experienced significant soreness and is scheduled to undergo additional testing Wednesday to further evaluate the injury.
Griffin Jax, Rays - Right Elbow
Jax received encouraging news after being evaluated by Dr. Keith Meister for the right elbow discomfort that landed him on the 15-day injured list. Jax received an injection to calm inflammation in the back of his elbow, with the Rays not expecting an extended absence. Manager Kevin Cash said Jax will rest from throwing for two more days before beginning to ramp back up, calling the update "very good."
Tuesday, August 11th
Kyle Stowers, Marlins - Left Hamstring
Stowers has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Stowers underwent further evaluation after initially being diagnosed with hamstring discomfort, with the strain now requiring an IL stint. Miami has not yet announced a specific timetable for his return.
Jameson Taillon, Blue Jays - Right Forearm
Taillon has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tendinitis, one day after exiting his start against the Red Sox with forearm tightness. Taillon had thrown four scoreless innings before reporting discomfort while getting extension on his cutters and sliders. The diagnosis provides more clarity after Toronto initially sent him for an MRI, though the Blue Jays have not yet announced a timetable for his return.
Trey Yesavage, Blue Jays - Left Meniscus
Yesavage underwent surgery Tuesday to repair damage to the meniscus in his left knee. The Blue Jays have not provided a firm recovery timetable, but manager John Schneider said the team is not ruling out a return this season.
Matt Chapman, Giants - Abdominal
Chapman will undergo season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair an abdominal strain. The Giants third baseman was evaluated Monday by specialist Dr. William C. Meyers, who confirmed the core muscle injury and recommended surgery. Chapman will remain in Philadelphia for the procedure, officially ending his 2026 season.
Blake Snell, Dodgers - Left Elbow
Snell will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start for the Dodgers on Tuesday, marking his return from left elbow surgery. Snell made just one start earlier this season after initially opening the year on the IL with left shoulder fatigue before loose bodies in his elbow required surgical removal.
Caleb Kilian, Phillies - Left Oblique
Kilian has been placed on the injured list with a moderate left oblique strain, just over a week after being acquired by the Phillies at the Trade Deadline. Interim manager Don Mattingly did not provide a specific grade or recovery timeline but indicated that Kilian is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.
Monday, August 10th
Hunter Greene, Reds - Right Elbow
Greene will undergo season-ending surgery after a second opinion confirmed a partially torn UCL in his right elbow. Greene was placed on the injured list after experiencing soreness during a side session, with subsequent imaging showing that the ligament was failing. The exact procedure will be determined during surgery. Greene previously underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018 and had another procedure in March to remove bone chips from the same elbow, limiting him to just five starts this season. The Reds have not provided a recovery timeline and would not speculate on Greene's availability for the 2027 season.
Kyle Stowers, Marlins - Left Hamstring
Stowers exited Sunday's win over the Angels with left hamstring discomfort after going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. The Marlins sent Stowers for further evaluation to determine the severity of the injury and have not yet provided a timetable for his return. The issue is notable given that Stowers already missed time earlier this season with a right hamstring injury.
Cooper Pratt, Brewers - Right Hamstring
Pratt has been placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a right hamstring strain during Saturday's win over the Twins. The Brewers have not yet announced the severity of the strain or provided a timetable for the shortstop's return.
Griffin Jax, Rays - Right Elbow
Jax has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort after being scratched from his scheduled start against the Mariners. The IL move is retroactive to Thursday, but the Rays have not yet announced the severity of the injury or a timetable for his return.
Joe Musgrove, Padres - Right Elbow
Musgrove took another significant step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery by throwing 53 pitches in his second minor league rehab start. The Padres right-hander worked 3 1/3 innings for Triple-A El Paso, allowing one run while striking out two and issuing no walks. More importantly, Musgrove appeared healthy throughout the outing and continues to build his workload without a reported setback. He is progressing toward a return to San Diego's rotation, potentially later this month.
Tyler Glasnow, Dodgers - Lower Back
Glasnow continues to progress toward a return from the lower back spasms that have sidelined him since May. The Dodgers right-hander made his second minor league rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Oklahoma City after previous attempts to ramp up his workload resulted in his back flaring up. Los Angeles has taken a slower approach with his throwing program, and Glasnow has since progressed without another setback. He is currently on track to rejoin the Dodgers' rotation before the end of August.
