The MLB injury landscape continues to shift as several key players inch closer to returns while others hit the injured list. Here’s the latest comprehensive update from across both leagues.
American League (AL)
Baltimore Orioles
Tyler Wells (RHP) – Recovering from right UCL repair surgery, tossed four scoreless innings in his third rehab start with Triple-A Norfolk on Aug. 10.
Kyle Bradish (RHP) – Continuing rehab from Tommy John surgery after making his fourth start on Aug. 8.
Albert Suárez (RHP) – Recovering from right subscapularis strain; scheduled to begin a Minor League rehab assignment this week.
Chicago White Sox
Martín Pérez (LHP) – Left elbow inflammation; made his second rehab start with Double-A Birmingham on Aug. 8. Return date decision pending bullpen session.
Miguel Vargas (INF) – Left oblique strain; aiming to take swings on the field Aug. 11.
Cleveland Guardians
John Means (LHP) – Coming back from left elbow UCL surgery; threw two innings in a “bridge” game on Aug. 9 at the team’s Arizona complex.
Detroit Tigers
Matt Vierling (OF) – Placed on 10-day IL on Aug. 10 with a left oblique strain.
Houston Astros
Yordan Alvarez (OF) – Recovering from right hand fracture; progressed from cage work on Aug. 8 to on-field hitting on Aug. 9.
Jake Meyers (OF) – Right calf strain; sprinting, hitting, and doing outfield drills. Team increasing workload before live at-bats.
Luis Garcia (RHP) – Tommy John surgery recovery; will make at least one more rehab start.
Josh Hader (P) - Added to the 15-day IL on Aug. 12 with a left shoulder capsule strain, he will miss at least a month.
Kansas City Royals
Bobby Witt Jr. (SS) – Out of lineup Aug. 10 with back stiffness.
Michael Lorenzen (RHP) – Left oblique strain; made second rehab start with Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Aug. 10.
Cole Ragans (LHP) – Left rotator cuff strain; on track to throw a bullpen this week.
Jac Caglianone (OF) – Left hamstring strain; taking live at-bats, throwing, and running, with rehab assignment expected this week.
Mark Canha (OF) – Left elbow epicondylitis; began rehab assignment Aug. 8.
Michael Massey (INF) – Multiple injuries (ankle, wrist, back); rehab assignment began Aug. 9.
Minnesota Twins
Byron Buxton (OF) – Activated from IL on Aug. 11 after left rib cartilage irritation.
New York Yankees
Amed Rosario (INF) – Placed on 10-day IL (retro Aug. 9) with left shoulder sternoclavicular joint sprain.
Paul Goldschmidt (1B): Goldschmidt has a low-grade right knee sprain, and the Yankees will decide before Friday’s game in St. Louis whether to place him on the injured list.
Oakland Athletics
Luis Severino (RHP) – Placed on 15-day IL (retro Aug. 6) with left oblique strain.
Tampa Bay Rays
Taylor Walls (INF) – Left groin soreness; out of lineup through Aug. 10.
Shane McClanahan (SP) - Underwent a clean up surgery on Aug 11 around his irritated nerve in his left triceps.
Toronto Blue Jays
Shane Bieber (RHP) – Returning from Tommy John surgery; threw 78 pitches in second rehab start Aug. 9, likely needs one more outing.
George Springer (OF) – Cleared concussion protocol on August 13 and activated on Aug 16.
Anthony Santander (OF) – Left shoulder inflammation; week-to-week, has not resumed swinging.
National League (NL)
Atlanta Braves
Ronald Acuña Jr. (OF) – Recovering from right Achilles injury; travelling with team and likely to be activated from the IL without the need for a rehab assignment.
Chris Sale (LHP) – Fractured rib cage; made his first rehab start for Triple-A on Aug. 12 with 40 pitches, next scheduled Aug.17.
Chicago Cubs
Jameson Taillon (RHP) – Right calf strain; threw 78 pitches over 4 2/3 innings in Aug. 8 rehab start.
Miguel Amaya (C) – Amaya is headed to the injured list after spraining his left ankle stepping on first base Wednesday against the Blue Jays. He was carted off after landing awkwardly while beating out an infield single.
Cincinnati Reds
Hunter Greene (RHP) – Greene returned to the Reds’ rotation Wednesday, throwing six scoreless innings in an 8-0 win over the Phillies.
Nick Lodolo (LHP) – Left index finger blister; resumed throwing Aug. 10.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Max Muncy (3B) - Suffered a grade 1 right oblique strain in practice and placed on the 10-day IL, will miss several weeks.
Roki Sasaki (RHP) – Right shoulder impingement; rehab assignment begins Aug. 14, eyeing late August/early September return.
Kirby Yates (RHP) – Lower back pain; facing hitters Aug. 13 before possible rehab assignment.
Michael Kopech (RHP) – Right knee meniscectomy; facing hitters Aug. 11, needs multiple live sessions before rehab.
Kiké Hernández (INF/OF) – Left elbow inflammation; taking grounders, throwing, running. Not yet swinging.
Milwaukee Brewers
Jacob Misiorowski (RHP) – Left tibia contusion; threw three simulated innings Aug. 9.
Jackson Chourio (OF) – Right hamstring strain; resumed swinging Aug. 8.
Logan Henderson (RHP) – Right flexor tendon strain; placed on 15-day IL Aug. 8. UCL intact.
New York Mets
Tylor Megill (RHP) – Right elbow sprain; threw bullpen Aug. 10, could start rehab assignment soon.
Philadelphia Phillies
Alec Bohm (INF) – Left rib fracture; began rehab assignment Aug. 10.
Aaron Nola (RHP) – Nola returns from the injured list and is lined up for the series finale Sunday at Washington. The 32-year-old right-hander is coming back from a right ankle sprain.
Jhoan Duran (P) - Carted off from his Aug. 15 start when hit on his lower right leg/ankle by a comebacker, x-rays were negative.
Zach Wheeler (P) - Has a blood clot near his right shoulder, placed on the 15-day injured list, his return will depend on the response to treatment.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Oneil Cruz (OF) - Added to the 7-day concussion IL on Aug. 13 after a collision with Jack Suwinski in the outfield on Aug. 12.
San Francisco Giants
Matt Chapman (3B) - Placed on the 10-day IL with right hand inflammation after suffering a strain on the same hand in June.
San Diego Padres
Michael King (knee): The San Diego Padres placed King on the 15-day injured list Thursday because of left knee inflammation. He was scheduled to start Friday vs. the Dodgers.
St. Louis Cardinals
Brendan Donovan (INF) – Left groin tightness; scratched Aug. 9, remained out Aug. 10.
Washington Nationals
Luis García Jr. (INF) – Back tightness; out since Aug. 8.
