The Los Angeles Angels have placed Mike Trout on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain.

Trout suffered the injury while running to first base during Wednesday's game and was unavailable for Thursday's series opener. The three-time American League MVP expressed optimism that the injury will not keep him sidelined for long.

"I was a little worried last night, but had a plane ride and just sitting down after playing, so that kind of came into effect," Trout said. "But it feels way better today. I'm not overly concerned about it, but I'm going to do everything I can in that training room and the weight room to get back."

The injury interrupts what had been one of Trout's healthiest seasons in recent years. Through Wednesday, he had appeared in 74 of the Angels' first 75 games while batting .234 with 17 home runs, 36 RBIs, and an American League-leading 54 runs scored. His 66 walks rank second in Major League Baseball.

Outlook

The encouraging news for the Angels is that Trout reported improvement less than 24 hours after the injury occurred and does not appear overly concerned about the severity of the strain.

However, hamstring injuries can be difficult to predict, particularly for players whose game relies on running and explosiveness. The Angels will likely take a cautious approach given Trout's extensive injury history and his importance to the lineup.

The club has not announced a timetable for his return, though Trout indicated he hopes the injured list stint will be brief.
