The San Diego Padres have placed starting pitcher Michael King on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder issue, which has been officially diagnosed as a scapula injury.
While any shoulder-related concern can raise alarms, this specific diagnosis is actually a silver lining. The scapula, or shoulder blade, is part of the shoulder girdle rather than the joint itself—meaning it’s generally less complicated and has a more favorable recovery outlook.
The injury is not considered serious, and early indications suggest that King could return after the minimum 15-day stint. Best-case scenario, the right-hander could be back in under a month if all goes well with rest and treatment. Given King's value to the rotation, the Padres may still opt to err on the side of caution, especially with several months remaining in the season.
Regardless of how long he's out, this is considered relatively good news for both King and the Padres. A joint-related issue could have meant a much longer absence or even structural damage. Instead, this diagnosis offers optimism that King will make a full and timely return—an encouraging development for a Padres team still very much in the playoff hunt.
