Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy suffered a significant left knee injury during a steal attempt by Michael A. Taylor in the late innings of the July 2 game. Early analysis by Dr. David Chao indicates at least a high-grade MCL sprain, with concern for an ACL tear based on secondary video angles.
Muncy’s planted left leg took direct helmet-to-knee contact as Taylor slid into third. The mechanism — plant and impact — is more typical of football-style injuries. Dr. Chao noted that best-case scenario is multi-week MCL injury, sidelining Muncy until early August. Worst-case: a season-ending ACL tear.
Out for All-Star Game
Return timeline: August at best
May shift to DH role upon return to reduce infield mobility demands
Significant blow to Dodgers playoff depth
2021: Torn UCL in left elbow, missed postseason
2022: Slow recovery from elbow surgery, struggled at the plate
2023: Battled lingering left hamstring tightness
2024: Minor back stiffness and left knee soreness earlier in season
This latest injury is a significant concern for a power hitter who relies on lower-body torque.
