Marlins' Daniel Castano OK After Taking Line Drive To Head

Marlins' left-handed starter Daniel Castano suffered a mild concussion and forehead contusion after getting hit with a 104 MPH liner in the first inning on Thursday.

Daniel Castano Injury Update

According to the Pro Baseball Docs, the visual of the play was much worse than the impact because, while it was a rocket off the bat, the small mass of the ball limits the damage.

Castano's CT scan came back normal, according to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com, but no decision on his status going forward has been made.

The ball hit his head hard enough to pop in the air out of the camera's view and into Joey Wendle's glove at third base.

The 27-year-old starter said that he was happy the play resulted in an out and helped the Marlins win the contest.

Castano said that he “kind of went black for a second" after the play but was able to walk off the field after coming to and do a postgame interview donning a bandage on his forehead.

Some pitchers in the last 10 years – Chris Bassitt in 2021 and Brandon McCarthy in 2012 – have suffered significant injuries after being hit by comebackers, but those are somewhat rare.

Bassitt was hit in the eye, causing a cheek fracture and 15 stitches, while McCarthy suffered a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage after getting hit on the side of his head.

Castano has pitched in 10 games, starting seven, with a 4.04 ERA and 1.43 WHIP with 20 strikeouts in 35.2 IP.
