Knee Injury May Limit Manny Machado in Divisional Series

Knee Injury May Limit Manny Machado in Divisional Series

Manny Machado, the San Diego Padres star third baseman, suffered a right knee injury on a swing in his final at bat of San Diego’s triumphant Game 3 win over the Mets.

By video, the Pro Baseball Docs believe Machado likely suffered a low-grade strain of his medial patella femoral ligament on the swing and miss in the top of the 9th inning.

Machado appeared to suffer a tweak of an injury that has required surgery in both knees in the past. This recent injury will not need surgery but will likely result in some swelling and soreness.

That discomfort could limit his ability to hit for power on inside pitches and restrict his mobility at third base.

Machado will assuredly play through without hesitation but it is a key injury to watch in the upcoming series against the Dodgers.

The former Oriole had the same surgery in each knee, one in 2013 and one in 2014 to address bilateral patella femoral instability. He is at greater risk for reinjury given his anatomy and the knee tweak, although minor, could not have come at a worse time for the Padres.

Earlier this season, the 30-year-old slugger was hindered by a left ankle injury he suffered in mid-June.

He hit .202 in July with a season-low .415 slugging percentage but caught fire in August and has been the main bat in the Padres offense.

Padres vs. Dodgers Series Odds

The Padres are 1.5 run underdogs with Mike Clevinger on the mound in Los Angeles against Julio Urias and the over/under is 7.5, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

San Diego is +194 to win the series, with the Dodgers at -235. The Friars are +1100 to win the World Series.
