Jazz Chisholm Diagnosed With Stress Fracture in Back, Season Likely Over

Marlins star second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back and will likely be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

On Thursday, our panel of Pro Baseball Docs detailed why the news of a follow-up CT scan was concerning.

Unfortunately, the fears of a stress fracture of the L5 vertebra on his right side have come true.

Jazz Chisholm Recovery Timeline

The team has stated a return timeline of roughly six weeks, but stress fractures in the spine don't heal quickly.

There is no easy surgery to fix the vertebra in the lower back and no option to cast the fracture, meaning Chisholm's season is likely done.

By early-to-mid September, it might not be the best option for Miami to rush the 24 year old back to action.

The Marlins are 43-49 and currently sit six games out of the second wildcard.

Chisholm underwent an MRI on his back after suffering a lower right back strain on a swing-and-miss on June 24.

He was selected as an All-Star, but was replaced by Jeff McNeil. The third-year second baseman reportedly took swings during the All-Star break but had trouble running and cutting.

Chisholm is hitting .254 with 14 home runs, 39 runs and 45 RBIs in 60 games this season.

Joey Wendle will likely serve as the everyday second baseman with Chisholm out.
