Jarred Kelenic Suffers Broken Foot After Kicking Water Cooler

Jarred Kelenic, the Mariners third-year left fielder, was placed on the 10-day IL Thursday with a broken left foot he suffered when he kicked a water cooler following a 9th inning strikeout.

Jarred Kelenic Return Timeline

He will miss at least a month while recovering from the injury and would be fortunate to return by the end of August, according to the Pro Baseball Docs.

The Mariners reported he will miss “a few weeks,” but the Pro Baseball Docs assert his absence will be closer to a month at minimum. Kelenic bats left-handed, thus he will need his back foot to be near full health to return effectively.

Kelenic is no stranger to injury, although this instance could certainly have been avoided. He was caught looking in a 9th inning at bat against Twins' closer Jhoan Duran and reportedly kicked the water cooler when he returned to the dugout.

The 24-year-old missed 30 games from early June to mid-July in 2021 with a right knee sprain.

Talking to reporters on Thursday, Kelenic showed remorse and said he had “let his teammates down.”

Impact on the Mariners

Seattle will use a platoon in left field with Cade Marlowe and AJ Pollock going forward, according to Seattle Times reporter Ryan Divish.

The team called up Marlowe after putting Kelenic on the 10-day IL.

Kelenic is hitting .252 with 11 home runs in 90 games this season. At 47-48 entering play on Thursday, the Mariners sit in 4th place in the AL West but are rumored to be buyers at the deadline.

They have been linked to Mets' outfielder Mark Canha as a potential target.
