Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz is expected to miss months after undergoing surgery on his right elbow to remove loose bodies. The Dodgers announced the procedure and said they expect Díaz to return in the second half of the season.
Díaz was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday. He has four saves and 10 strikeouts in seven appearances this season. In his last two outings, Díaz allowed six earned runs on seven hits.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Díaz’s most recent appearance raised concern.
“We just wanted to be proactive and felt that it was smart to get him an MRI,” Roberts said.
The imaging did not reveal any additional ligament damage. Roberts also said the Dodgers are likely to use a committee approach in the closer role while Díaz is out.
