Phillies' star outfielder and DH Bryce Harper will reportedly begin a rehab assignment for the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs on Tuesday with the goal of getting back to the big leagues by September 1.
Harper has been mostly stagnant since he suffered a comminuted left thumb fracture on June 25 that required surgery and a recovery timeline of 6-to-8 weeks.
The Pro Baseball Docs were optimistic that Harper would be ready to return after the minimum six weeks, but Wednesday will mark eight weeks since Harper underwent surgery.
The reigning NL MVP began taking batting practice and facing live pitchers last week and will now play at least five games in Triple-A.
Harper is likely to continue as the everyday DH when he is activated because he is still experiencing right elbow soreness.
The 29-year-old suffered a torn right UCL early in the season and hasn't been cleared to throw yet.
