Astros Injury Update: Setback for Yordan Alvarez & IL Trip for Jeremy Peña

The Houston Astros are facing a critical stretch of the season without two of their most important bats, as Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Peña have both been sidelined with injuries.

Alvarez, recovering from a broken right hand, experienced a setback this week and is now scheduled to see a specialist. He has been shut down from all baseball activities until further evaluation. The slugger felt renewed pain during his arrival at the Astros’ spring training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida, following a workout the previous day.

Initially diagnosed with a muscle strain nearly two months ago, Alvarez’s injury was later revealed via imaging in late May to be a small fracture. He had been eyeing a return this weekend during Houston’s road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that plan is now on hold indefinitely.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Peña was also placed on the injured list after suffering a rib fracture on his left side. The injury occurred when an 89 mph changeup struck him in the rib cage, delivering a serious blow to an offense already missing Alvarez.

Peña was in the midst of a breakout season, slashing .322/.867 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs, ranking near the top of the league in multiple categories. His production has been vital to Houston’s lineup, and his absence will be deeply felt.

“It’s unfortunate, but we’ll take it day by day,” Peña said. “I don’t feel too bad. I don’t think it’s something too serious, but we’ll give it time and see how it plays out.”

Neither Peña nor general manager Dana Brown gave a firm return date, though both expressed optimism it will be a short-term absence. His IL stint was backdated to June 28, which means the earliest he could return is July 8.
