Angels Injury Report: Shohei Ohtani Out of Lineup vs Blue Jays, Dealing With Back Stiffness

Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is out of the lineup for tonight's game against the Blue Jays after reportedly dealing with back stiffness during his start on the mound Thursday.

Shohei Ohtani Injury Update

The 2021 MVP will hit the bench for the first time since May 2, when he was relegated to a pinch hitting appearance while resting groin tightness.

Ohtani reportedly felt stiffness in his back during the first inning of Thursday's appearance, but stayed in the game. He gave up five runs in six innings, including two home runs, but struck out 10 batters.

He told reporters he doesn't think it's a serious injury, but the Pro Baseball Docs note that back stiffness is tough to play through as a hitter or a pitcher.

Ohtani is hitting .249 this season with 9 home runs and 29 RBIs. On the mound, he's 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 8 starts.

Taylor Ward will start as designated hitter and lead off against Alex Manoah and the Toronto Blue Jays tonight.

Ward is playing in his first game since running in the outfield wall while making a catch against the A's last Friday.
