Angels Injury Report: Anthony Rendon To Undergo Wrist Surgery, Out For Season

The Angels announced Friday that all-star third baseman Anthony is expected to undergo right wrist surgery next week and will miss the rest of the 2022 season.

Anthony Rendon Injury Update

The 32-year-old reportedly dealt with wrist issues all season and this will be his second stint on the IL.

He was placed on the 10-day IL on May 26 with inflammation and played only four games after returning on April 10 before suffering a wrist sprain on Tuesday.

Rendon made a bare-handed throw in the bottom of the fourth that well short of first base and was replaced on defense in the next inning. It is not immediately clear if that is when he suffered the sprain, but it was the final play he was involved in this season.

The Angels' recent struggles coincide with Rendon's injuries: the team was 26-19 on May 26 and have gone 3-16 since, dropping the Angels to 30-35.

Since signing with Los Angeles ahead of the 2020 season Rendon has played in 155 games and the Angels have an 82-73 record in those games, but are 133-154 overall in that span.

Rendon's 2021 season was also cut short after undergoing right hip surgery to repair an impingement he suffered while rehabbing from a left hamstring strain. This is his third season of a massive seven-year contract that will have him a core piece of LA until his age 36 season.

Utility infielder Matt Duffy replaced him on Tuesday and he will likely be a part of a platoon that also includes David Fletcher, who is currently on the 60-day IL with a hip injury, and Jack Mayfield, who is starting at third on Friday.

Duffy is batting .288 with five RBI and six runs in 104 at-bats as a fill-in player this season.

Also in line for MLB games is infield prospect Michael Stefanic, according to OC Register's Jeff Fletcher. The 26-year-old is currently on the IL in AAA but would be next in line for starts at third or second base.
