White Sox Shortstop Tim Anderson Likely Heading For Long IL Stint With Groin Strain

Superstar shortstop Tim Anderson left Sunday's game in the 5th inning after appearing to suffer a severe right groin injury while fielding a grounder and completing the throw to first.

Tim Anderson Injury Update

By video, Anderson suffered a right groin/adductor strain that will likely require a 60-day IL trip before he returns, according to our team of Pro Baseball Docs.

Anderson had to be essentially carried off the field and did not attempt to use his right leg when going down the dugout steps. He hopped around in clear pain and went to the ground after making the off balance throw to first.

Manager Tony La Russa told reporters after the game that Anderson is definitely heading for an IL stint. He said the team will know more about the severity after an MRI on Monday.

The Pro Baseball Docs, with decades of combined MLB experience, expect that MRI to reveal a severe strain.

Given the way Anderson immediately went down and was unable to use his leg while exiting, the MRI news is unlikely to be positive for Anderson and the White Sox.

Injury Impact on White Sox

If placed on the 60-day IL, he would be eligible to return in late June/early August.

Danny Mendick replaced Anderson in Sunday's win over the Cubs and will likely man the shortstop position for the near future. Utility man Leury Garcia can also play shortstop, but is hitting .190 in 116 at bats this season.

Injuries are piling up for Chicago, but Luis Robert is expected to rejoin the team on Tuesday after his recent bout with COVID-19.

Starter Lance Lynn remains on the 60-day IL and Eloy Jiménez has not played since suffering a torn hamstring on April 23.

White Sox World Series Odds

At 23-23, the White Sox are 5 games back from the Minnesota Twins, but are -120 to win the AL Central, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The American League Chicago team is currently at +2000 to win the World Series.
