(Update: Kyler Murray returned to practice on Friday and is listed as questionable. Pro Football Doc expects Jacoby Brissett to get the start this week.)

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was listed as a DNP (did not practice) due to a right foot injury, and video review from Pro Football Doc Dr. David Chao reveals noticeable signs of limitation.

“It likely is an injury to the ligaments along the first ray, either at the base of the metatarsal or at the toe end of the metatarsal. It's either a Lisfranc or turf toe type variant involving the first ray in his foot. The good news from this is that it doesn't look severe. The bad news is you saw how it affected him in the 4th quarter of Sunday's game.”

According to Dr. Chao, the mechanics of Murray’s throwing motion changed after the injury, leading to decreased accuracy and velocity on deeper throws.

“His right foot is indeed injured. We can see where he’s inaccurate, throwing a little high downfield,” Chao explained. “In some ways, this is what happened to Brock Purdy with his right turf toe — he couldn’t push off and was less accurate.”

While it’s not yet confirmed to be turf toe, the injury appears to affect Murray’s right back plant foot, which plays a critical role in his throwing power and movement.

“It will affect his running mobility and accuracy downfield,” said Chao. “It remains to be seen if he will play this week. We think he’s going to try and give it a go, but even if he does, it could affect both his accuracy and mobility.”

Sports Injury Central will continue to monitor Murray's practice participation this week for more updates.
