On Wednesday morning, Wake Forest announced that their starting quarterback Sam Hartman is out indefinitely due to a “non-football-related” medical condition.
Here's a statement from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons' athletic department:
"Following a workout on Tuesday, Aug. 9, redshirt junior quarterback Sam Hartman sought medical attention for a non-football-related condition. The results of those tests and subsequent treatment will remove Sam from team activities indefinitely. The timeline for his return to competition is uncertain. In respect for Sam's privacy and in compliance with HIPAA, no additional details will be shared at this time. Wake Forest Athletics medical and athletics training staff are providing Sam and his family with constant support. More updates will be shared when appropriate.”
With limited details, the Pro Football Docs don't want to speculate on the exact issue. The hope is Hartman can return to play football this season, but his health is obviously the priority.
The 23-year-old just led the Demon Deacons to the ACC Atlantic Division title last season and a Gator Bowl win over Rutgers, throwing for 4,228 yards and 50 total touchdowns. He has a school record of 72 touchdown passes while adding 9,266 yards through the air.
Hartman released a statement as well:
"Tuesday was a frustrating day, but I am extremely grateful for our medical staff and for Dr. Chris Miles and Niles Fleet for staying with me throughout this process," Hartman said. "I look forward to attacking this rehabilitation process and I am so appreciative of the support I have received from my family, teammates, and coaches."
While he’s away from the team, Mitch Griffis will take the reigns as the starting quarterback. Griffis has one touchdown pass in his short college career.
Hartman does have another year of eligibility remaining. So, that leaves the door open for a return.
