NFL Week 1 brings several important injury situations for fantasy football managers to monitor, with Malik Nabers, Ashton Jeanty, Jeremiyah Love, Rome Odunze, Emeka Egbuka and Patrick Mahomes among the key players entering the opening week with injury concerns.
Some are returning from significant injuries suffered last season, while others are managing more recent issues from training camp and the preseason. Here are the latest injury updates, practice statuses and Week 1 outlooks for the top fantasy football players dealing with injuries.
Malik Nabers, Giants WR — Knee
Nabers is working his way back from the torn ACL he suffered last season. He gradually ramped up his workload during training camp before shedding the red non-contact jersey and returning to full participation.
Nabers said the Giants are leaving the final decision on his Week 1 availability up to him and that he remains confident in his knee. He was a full participant in practice throughout the week leading up to the season opener. He is officially listed as questionable.
Ashton Jeanty, Raiders RB — Ankle
Jeanty suffered an ankle sprain during an Aug. 23 practice after landing awkwardly while diving for a low pass from quarterback Kirk Cousins. He was unable to put weight on his right leg and needed assistance leaving the field.
Jeanty returned to practice this week as a full participant and expects to play Week 1 against the Miami Dolphins. He said his ankle feels “really good” heading into the season opener. He officially has no injury designation.
Jeremiyah Love, Cardinals RB — Ankle
Love suffered a left high ankle sprain during the Arizona Cardinals' preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on Aug. 13. The injury sidelined him for the remainder of the preseason.
Love returned to practice as a limited participant ahead of Week 1 and is expected to play. He is officially listed as questionable. The bigger question for fantasy managers is how much of a workload the rookie running back will handle Sunday if he plays.
Rome Odunze, Bears WR — Foot/Calf
Odunze discussed the long-term effects of his previous foot injury during OTAs, saying the way his foot healed created structural changes that have become his “new normal.” Despite those changes, Odunze said he is not dealing with constant pain and does not believe the injury will affect his ability to perform.
Odunze then suffered a calf injury on Sept. 3 that kept him out of practice. Odunze is officially questionable for Week 1 against the Panthers after returning to practice Thursday as a limited participant. Despite the designation, Odunze said, “I doubt I’m questionable… I plan on playing.”
Emeka Egbuka, Buccaneers WR — Toe
Egbuka suffered a toe sprain during a joint practice with the New York Jets in mid-August. The Buccaneers gave him nearly a month to recover before he returned as a full participant in practice Wednesday.
Egbuka is set to play Week 1 against the Bengals after working his way back from a toe injury. Head coach Todd Bowles said Egbuka is “a full go” for Sunday’s season opener.
Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs QB — Knee
Mahomes is expected to start Monday night, just nine months after tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee.
The Chiefs quarterback was fully cleared for football activities in July and participated throughout training camp, although Kansas City held him out of the preseason.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he expects Mahomes to start the Week 1 matchup against the Denver Broncos.
“Most likely, he'll be the guy out there,” Reid said. “Other than having a brace on his leg, everything looks normal. He's running around the same way he's always done. I think he'll be fine there.”
