During today’s game, Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was forced to leave the game after twisting his left knee, prompting an exam in the blue medical tent on the sidelines. By video, Penix went down after being met in the pocket, and his left knee was underneath him as he landed on the turf. His exit raises serious concerns, especially given his prior injury history, and Atlanta’s offense now faces uncertainty under center.
Penix enters this incident with a well-documented history of knee injuries. During his college career at Indiana, he suffered two torn ACLs, both in his right knee, first in 2018, and again in 2020. While those injuries were surgically repaired, repeated trauma to the knee area has remained a talking point. More recently, reports have indicated that Penix has been dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee, sustained in a previous game, which contributed to limitations during practice and raised red flags among team medical staff.
Beyond his knees, Penix has also battled shoulder issues in the past. As a collegian, he suffered a separated AC joint injury in his left throwing shoulder. Despite those setbacks, he recovered and played two productive seasons with Washington, showcasing resilience and talent. However, his repeated injury history means today’s knee issue will be watched closely, not just for the immediate impact, but for its potential long-term implications on his mobility and durability as Atlanta’s franchise quarterback.
