According to reports, an MRI confirmed that Lakers star LeBron James suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee during the fourth quarter of Game 5 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The injury news was reported by ESPN and was not confirmed by the Lakers. The injury carries a recommended recovery timeline of three to five weeks.
According to our Pro Docs at SIC, despite LeBron James entering his 23rd season at age 40, he’s expected to be ready for the start of next season, and the injury is not considered a long-term concern.
The injury occurred with 8:39 remaining in the fourth quarter when Timberwolves guard Donte DiVincenzo collided with James in the lane and was whistled for an offensive foul. Despite the injury, James returned to the game with 7:23 left and played through to the end of the Lakers' 103-96 season-ending loss.
James’ durability has been a hallmark of his postseason career, he has appeared in a record 292 playoff games without missing one due to injury. Had there been a Game 6 in Minneapolis, that streak would have ended according to reports.
With the Lakers' season officially over, James had planned to shift focus to the red carpet. He was slated to attend the 2025 Met Gala in New York City on Monday as one of the event’s co-chairs. However, just hours before the event, James announced on social media that he would not attend due to his knee injury. His wife, Savannah James, will attend in his place and represent the family.
LeBron James holds a $52.6 million player option for the 2025–26 NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers. While he has not officially announced his decision, reports suggest that James is expected to exercise this option and return for his 23rd NBA season.
