Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and could miss up to two months, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Tuesday. The news arrives just hours after Minnesota listed Edwards as questionable for Wednesday's home game against the Warriors, and a day after he played 41 minutes in an overtime loss to the Cavaliers. The timeline is not guaranteed, and the Timberwolves have not yet detailed the exact procedure.
Edwards had been managing the knee since the opener. He was listed as questionable for Monday's game with right knee injury management, was unavailable to the media after Sunday's win over the Raptors because he was receiving treatment, and still scored 47 points on 19-of-34 shooting against Cleveland, one of the league's top scoring nights this season. Minnesota, which started 3-0, now takes a major hit to its offense just as it integrates LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga into a lineup that also features Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert.
The surgery follows a year of knee trouble. In March, the Timberwolves announced Edwards would be reevaluated in one to two weeks because of right knee inflammation, an issue described as runner's knee. In Game 4 of the first round against the Nuggets on April 25, he hyperextended his left knee and suffered a bone bruise while contesting a layup, an injury that left the knee structurally intact but was expected to cost him multiple weeks. He missed 21 games last season, the most of his career, and said this fall that he needed about two months away from basketball after the season to let the knees heal.
If Edwards is out for the full two months, he would be back around the end of December. In the meantime, expect Ayo Dosunmu and Terrence Shannon Jr. to see larger roles, with McDaniels and Kuminga also picking up more usage. Minnesota is also without Donte DiVincenzo, who tore his Achilles in the playoffs in April. The key updates are the date of the procedure, the team's formal timeline, and whether the Timberwolves add backcourt depth.
