The Cincinnati Bengals were dealt a major blow Sunday when quarterback Joe Burrow limped off the field with a left foot injury, later identified by video review as a possible case of turf toe. Burrow was seen walking to the locker room after suffering the injury for an MRI and will not return to action.

What makes this situation unique is Cincinnati’s medical setup. Paycor Stadium is the only NFL venue equipped with a full MRI machine on-site, allowing Burrow to undergo advanced imaging almost immediately after leaving the game. The decision to send him directly to MRI rather than tape his foot or fit him with a shoe insert strongly suggests the Bengals are assessing the severity of the injury rather than preparing him for a return to play.

Early video analysis shows dorsiflexion of Burrow’s left toe consistent with turf toe, a condition that can range widely in severity. In the mildest cases, players can return with minimal treatment, but more significant turf toe injuries can sideline athletes for multiple weeks. In the most severe scenarios, surgical intervention may even be required.

Based on available information, Burrow is not expected to return to today’s game. The bigger question now is how much time he might miss moving forward. With turf toe, recovery depends on the extent of soft tissue damage in the toe joint and whether swelling and instability limit an athlete’s ability to push off or plant during throws.

For Cincinnati, the timing is critical. Burrow’s health is central to the Bengals’ playoff aspirations, and any extended absence could shift the direction of their season. Until imaging results are confirmed, the team will likely take a cautious approach.
