Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña will miss the World Baseball Classic after being diagnosed with a fracture at the tip of his right ring finger, an injury he sustained while playing for the Dominican Republic.
Peña will be reevaluated in two weeks after the injury was confirmed by a hand specialist. His availability for Houston’s Opening Day game against the Los Angeles Angels is now also in question.
The 28-year-old suffered damage near the nail area of the finger while fielding a hard ground ball for the Dominican Republic during an exhibition game on Wednesday.
Peña is coming off a career-best 2025 season in which he earned his first All-Star selection and hit .304 with an .840 OPS and 20 stolen bases.
