Alvin Kamara’s Groin Injury: What It Means for The Remainder Of The Season

The New Orleans Saints faced a tough challenge in Week 15 against the Washington Commanders, but the game delivered an even bigger blow than the final score: star running back Alvin Kamara exited with a groin injury.

What Happened?

Kamara appeared to sustain the injury midway early in the fourth quarter. Kamara went to the medical tent then shortly after he walked back to the locker room while talking with a medical staffer.

Initially, it was unclear what happened to Kamara. However, the Saints revealed that he suffered a groin injury.

Before he exited the game, Kamara had five carries for 12 years while adding four receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown.

While initial reports suggested it was minor, he did not return to action, sparking concern among fans and analysts. Postgame comments from head coach Dennis Allen were noncommittal, labeling Kamara “day-to-day” pending further evaluation.

Groin injuries, even minor ones, can be notoriously tricky. They often hinder a player’s lateral movement, explosiveness, and acceleration — all key elements of Kamara’s game. Depending on the severity, recovery timelines can range from a few days to several weeks, potentially jeopardizing Kamara’s availability for the remainder of the regular season and even the postseason.

Kamara’s Value to the Saints

Kamara has been the engine of the Saints’ offense in 2024. Entering Week 15, he had amassed over 1,300 yards from scrimmage and 7 touchdowns, reaffirming his status as one of the league’s premier dual-threat running backs. His ability to turn checkdowns into chunk plays and stretch defenses with his versatility has been critical in keeping the Saints competitive this season.

Without Kamara, the Saints face a significant challenge. Their offense, which already lacks high-end explosiveness in the passing game, will need to lean heavily on a committee of less proven backs including Kendre Miller and Jamaal Williams.

What’s Next?

We expect Kamara to have an MRI to assess the extent of the injury. We expect Kamara to miss at least Week 16 and likely longer. With the Saints likely out of playoff contention after today, Kamara may not return in the coming weeks which is not great news for those in Fantasy Football playoffs who have relied on Kamara's production this season.
