Second-year quarterback Trey Lance suffered a right ankle fracture that will require season-ending surgery, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed after the game.
By video, that was the worst-case scenario the Pro Football Docs detailed in-game.
Lance will miss the remainder of the season, but should heal in time to participate in training camp ahead of the 2023 season.
In the meantime, Jimmy Garoppolo regains the reigns after healing from his offseason shoulder surgery.
Lance was injured on a quarterback draw on a 2nd and 8 with under 3 minutes left in the first quarter.
He was bent backwards on the tackle with his right leg trapped underneath, resulting in the fracture/dislocation.
Lance was 2 for 3 with 30 passing yards and 3 rushes for 13 yards before exiting.
Garoppolo finished the game 13 for 21 with 154 passing yards and a passing touchdown, plus 4 rushes for 5 yards and a rushing touchdown.
The 49ers play the Broncos on Sunday Night Football in Week 3. San Francisco opens up as 1.5-point underdogs and the over/under is 44, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
