Trey Lance Injury: 49ers QB Carted Off With Significant Right Ankle Injury
2 min read • September 18, 2022
Update: Trey Lance has been ruled out with an ankle injury. He is reportedly expected to undergo surgery, which will likely be season-ending.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance was carted off in the first quarter against the Seahawks after suffering an apparent right ankle injury.
By video, Lance appeared to suffer a significant right ankle injury, potentially a high ankle sprain with a fracture/dislocation, when he was folded up on a tackle, according to the Pro Football Docs.
He will undergo an X-ray to assess whether a fracture is involved. The hope is he's only dealing with a severe high ankle sprain.
If the fracture is confirmed, he will require season-ending surgery.
The second-year quarterback was placed in an air cast, which is typically used for unstable injuries.
The injury appeared similar to the ankle injury Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott suffered in 2020.
Lance's right foot was caught underneath and he was twisted with the pile, potentially causing the fracture/dislocation.
Despite speculation of a compound fracture, the picture above all but confirms our fear of an ankle fracture/dislocation.
Jimmy Garoppolo entered for Lance and will man the QB spot for the foreseeable future.
