Will Jets' Vinny Curry, Carl Lawson Bounce Back from 2021 Absences?

New York Jets fans and coaches last season had high expectations for the team’s defense, especially the defensive line.

The unit was considered the strongest position on the team with new signees in Vinny Curry and Carl Lawson. Yet, injuries plagued the line even before the season again.

In June, Jets medical staff discovered Curry had a rare blood disorder that required the removal of his spleen. His enlarged spleen, which was at risk of bursting, was double the average size. Complications of the surgery required Curry to sit out the entire 2021 season.

Just five months after signing a three-year, $45 million deal with the Jets, defensive end Carl Lawson ruptured his left Achilles during the last joint practice with the Green Bay Packers. He also missed last season.

Both players should now be back to help bolster one of the worst defensive units from last season. The defense finished 26th in total sacks last season with 33 and last in total yards allowed with 397.64 per game.

The Docs do not believe Curry's blood disorder will have any impact or limit him this season. His score dropped merely because he missed the entirety of last season. In 123 career games, the 34 year old has tallied 141 solo tackles, 32.5 sacks and 5 forced fumbles.

Curry returned to the field during OTAs.

Carl Lawson - SIC Score 78

While Curry should look like his normal self this season, our Docs are not so sure about Lawson. They fear he will not be as explosive, which is important for the defensive end position.

The 27 year old is rumored to be moving to the left side of the line. Shifting Lawson on the line worries Dr. David Chao because now Lawson’s outside leg that he turns on to get to the edge will now be his left leg. This could cause extra stress on the recently injured Achilles.

Lawson expects to be back in time for training camp in late July.

With both Curry and Lawson expected to be healthy this season, the Jets should have a deep defensive line. They join 2022 first round pick Jermaine Johnson, former third overall pick Quinnen Williams, John Franklin-Myers and recently signed Jacob Martin.

Pro Football Focus lists the unit at No.16 in the league for this season.
