Why QB Carson Wentz Doesn't Fit The Injury Prone Label

Carson Wentz - SIC Score 94

Wentz is now suiting up for his third team in three seasons with the Washington Commanders being his new destination. Some are quick to label Wentz a bust, or extremely injury prone, but the former Eagle played all 17 games last season for the Colts, and will hopes to keep that streak going in 2022 as he looks to shake off that narrative.

Although he underwhelmed in the biggest moments of the season for the Colts, Wentz wasn't terrible in 2021 statistically posting a very clean 27-7 TD/INT ratio. The Colts likely would’ve brought Wentz back if it weren’t for the horrific performance against the Jaguars in Week 18 that knocked out Indianapolis from playoff contention on the final day of the season.

Carson Wentz has had a laundry list of injuries throughout his career. The North Dakota State alum suffered a torn left ACL/LCL which required surgery, a fractured vertebrae, a concussion, a foot fracture, and an ankle sprain in his short time in the NFL.

However, our panel of Pro Football Docs believe Wentz isn’t an injury prone player as he recovers from injuries quickly and plays through injuries often.

Wentz’s ACL/LCL injury leaked over from the 2017 season into the 2018 season which led to back issue. If you isolate those two occurrences into one injury and shrug off the foot injury and concussion as mild injuries, the Wentz injury prone label begins to lose its stick.

Fantasy Implications

The Commanders went into the offseason with a plan to upgrade thier QB position and traded for Wentz in adeal that cost them a 2nd round and two 3rd round picks. Wentz finds himself a with a crew of talented offensive weapons including Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, Antonio Gibson and Logan Thomas who is coming off an injury riddled campaign. If the new QB can keep his confidence levels high and stay healthy, the Commanders may be in for a winning season in 2022 meaning Wentz has value as a late round flier in fantasy drafts if you miss out on a top level QB.
