Why Austin Ekeler Has A High SIC Score Heading Into The 2022 Season

After a career statistical year helping lead the Chargers to a 9-8 record, the Los Angeles Chargers running back, Austin Ekeler, hopes to continue his healthy upward trend sporting a solid 93 SIC score heading into the season.

The versatile running back was a crucial cog in the offense last season, putting up 1,558 total yards and 20 touchdowns. However, the question remains will he still be effective coming into his second contract after suffering multiple injuries.

Injury History

Ekeler had multiple injuries during the 2021 season but played 16 out of 17 games.

  • Sept. 8th - the Charger RB found himself on the injury report with a minor hamstring injury before the Week 1 game against the Washington Commanders. He played poorly as we discussed before the matchup rushing for just 57 yards and catching no passes.

  • Oct. 29th - Ekeler suffered a hip sprain but played the following week in a loss versus the New England Patriots. The stud contributed 124 total yards and showed no signed of being ailed.

  • Nov 7th - Ekeler dislocated his finger in the midst of the matchup versus the Eagles but stayed in the game.

  • Dec. 5th - It was reported that Ekeler had “bumps and bruises” on his ankle Week 13, but in fact suffered a high ankle sprain although would go on to play Thursday despite the short week.

  • Dec. 26th - Ekeler was placed on the COVID-19 list missing his only game of the season

Outside of last season, Ekeler has endured various injuries including multiple concussions and a severe avulsion hamstring injury that caused him to miss six games during the 2020 season

Fantasy Implications

The Chargers have drafted some reinforcements on the offensive side over the last few years including RBs Larry Roundtree III and Isaiah Spiller.

This shows the Chargers are trying to protect their star back from undergoing unhealthy seasons like 2021 but with how talented Ekeler is, it is impossible to keep him off the field.  Hopefully with the new stout offensive line and depth additions, Ekeler can produce at another elite fantasy season.
