ProFootballDoc: Zach Wilson Appears to Suffer Torn Right ACL In Preseason Opener

Update: Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters the team would know more on Saturday after an MRI.

The second-year coach said Wilson's ACL is “supposed to be intact,” but repeatedly emphasized the importance of Saturday's MRI.

Jets' quarterback Zach Wilson left Friday's preseason opener with his second significant right knee injury in as many years.

By video, the Pro Football Docs have significant worry that Wilson suffered a torn right ACL when he planted his foot while attempting to cut upfield.

If confirmed, the injury will require an ACL reconstruction and Wilson will be out for the 2022 season with an eye on Week 1, 2023.

Wilson took one more step before going down, limped off the field, and was quickly taken to the locker room.

The 23-year-old gunslinger missed four games in the middle of his rookie season after suffering a Grade 2 PCL strain in his right knee.

There is a slight hope the previous PCL strain spared his ACL in this case. The best-case scenario for Wilson would be a bone bruise.

Wilson returned in Week 12 last year and started the final seven games of the season, finishing with 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with four rushing touchdowns in 13 games.

To the docs at @SICscore, the knee appeared to shift. If Wilson is lucky, the injury could be a bone bruise and stop short of ACL tear. Zach did have PCL tear in this knee last year and that give some hope the shift was due to residual PCL laxity.
