Michigan star cornerback Will Johnson has long been regarded as one of the most talented defensive backs in college football. His elite lateral quickness, polished technique, and rare combination of size (6-foot-2, 202 pounds) and length make him a top NFL prospect. However, a string of injuries late in his collegiate career has raised concerns about his durability at the next level.
Johnson’s injury history began with knee surgery in the spring of 2023, a procedure that forced him to miss the first three games of Michigan’s championship-winning season. While he returned to earn first-team All-American and All-Big Ten honors, his availability remained a question mark.
In 2024, Johnson suffered a shoulder injury early in the season, exiting the Week 3 matchup against USC and missing the following game against Minnesota. Though he returned to action against Washington, his season was ultimately cut short in October due to a turf toe injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the year.
As Johnson forgoes his senior season to enter the NFL Draft, teams must weigh his elite talent against his injury history. Pro Football Doc notes that while his toe injury doesn’t appear to be a severe turf toe by video, teams will closely evaluate it along with his previous shoulder and knee issues. His coverage skills and instincts translate well to the next level, but durability concerns could affect his draft stock. Though Pro Football Doc doesn’t see a clear downgrade, it remains something to monitor. With the pre-draft process underway, watch whether Johnson participates in Combine drills or opts to showcase his skills at his Pro Day.
Johnson played in 14, 12, and 6 games across his three college seasons racking up nine career interceptions (three returned for touchdowns) and 57 tackles, cementing his status as a game-changing playmaker. He also shined on the biggest stage, earning defensive MVP honors in Michigan’s national championship victory over Washington.
