New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is managing a right shoulder injury suffered during the AFC Championship Game, though both the team and the quarterback remain optimistic about any limitations he may face.

Maye injured his right shoulder on a tackle during the championship matchup and was listed as a limited participant in practice throughout last week. The Patriots have not provided a formal diagnosis, but Sports Injury Central’s Pro Football Doc, Dr. David Chao, offered insight based on video review.

“It is likely a mild AC joint sprain versus a posterior capsular sprain based on how he fell on the Hufanga tackle,” Chao said. He noted that Maye’s body language following the play, including briefly “chicken-winging” his arm in the huddle, suggested discomfort but not a severe injury.

Despite the injury, Maye completed a 30-yard flea-flicker pass on the next play. Chao pointed out that the throw was a timing pass rather than a high-velocity throw, and that Maye’s remaining attempts were limited, including a dirted pass that could have been affected by multiple factors.

“Was it poor grip, the wind, the weather, the shoulder, or the route?” Chao said. “Either way — shoulder, weather, wrong route, or all of the above — that’s not the end-all.”

Maye downplayed the injury when speaking with reporters, saying he does not expect it to limit him moving forward.

“I feel good. I’ll be just fine,” Maye said during his podium availability on Monday. “I threw a good bit [during Monday’s Patriots practice]. I threw as much as I would at a normal practice. I felt great and I’m looking forward to getting back out there Wednesday and Thursday for practice and Friday to get ready for a normal week of prep.”

The Patriots are expected to continue monitoring Maye’s practice workload, but there has been no indication the injury will prevent him from playing.
