Miami Dolphins star WR Tyreek Hill suffered a devastating knee dislocation during Week 4 of Monday Night Football. While Hill has already undergone surgery and posted a video of himself walking with assistance, Pro Football Doc Dr. David Chao, cautions that the latest developments reveal just how serious his road to recovery may be.
Hill shared a video on Instagram showing him walking with a walker just days after surgery. While encouraging to fans, Dr. Chao stressed that it’s “actually not great news.”

“It is great that he’s already up and walking with a walker. He’s basically got a knee mobilizer on. His attitude has been fantastic, but if you look at his gait closely, he appears to have a foot drop, which is perineal nerve damage.”

The video appeared to show Hill dragging his left foot, a red flag for Pro Football Doc.

“He drags that left foot. The perineal nerve is the most common nerve injured in a knee dislocation, like Hill had, and he appears to have a perineal nerve palsy, which is a foot drop. Doesn’t mean it’s permanent. Expect him to get an AFO. Hopefully, the nerve can recover, but it is news that confirms this significant injury.”

While there is no reported artery damage, Hill’s injury does involve ligament damage and nerve involvement, complicating his recovery timeline.
Hill has undergone his first reconstructive surgery, and according to Dr. Chao, more procedures may still be on the table depending on his progress.

“No artery damage, but yes, some injury to the ligament. Had the first surgery. I still believe he’ll need another one, but this perineal nerve issue indicates a long road for recovery.”

The nerve injury is particularly concerning, as recovery is uncertain and can take months — if not years.
While the Dolphins have yet to release an official timetable, Hill is expected to miss at least the remainder of the 2025 season. His return in 2026 remains questionable given the complexity of the injury.

“It’s still early. Maybe the nerve can recover quickly. Let’s hope so. But that’s the news for Tyreek Hill. The long road to return in 2026 gets even longer, certainly wishing him the best.”
