Texas RB Jonathon Brooks tears his ACL

After beginning the season as the backup running back for the Texas Longhorns, Jonathon Brooks assumed the starting role and thrived until suffering a season-ending injury.

The redshirt sophomore sustained a torn ACL in the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s 29-26 victory against TCU, limping off the field with just under 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter and requiring assistance to reach the Longhorns’ locker room.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian released a statement regarding Brooks’ injury on Sunday.

“We’re heartbroken for Jonathon,” Sarkisian said. “He was having a fantastic season and leaves a void that needs to be filled. But we know he will continue to be an invaluable leader on our team, helping us prepare as we move forward in our mission this season. I know he’ll work extremely hard in his recovery, get back to full speed as soon as he can, and we will be there by his side supporting him through all of that.”

Anticipated to have a slow start in the upcoming season, Brooks is expected to regain his form by midseason progressively.

Before suffering the ACL injury, Brooks showcased his prowess against the Horned Frogs, amassing 104 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns and adding three receptions for 74 yards.

Throughout the season, Brooks rushed for 1,139 yards (ranking No. 6 in FBS) on 187 carries with an average of 6.1 yards per carry, scoring 10 touchdowns. Also, he contributed in the passing game with 25 receptions for 286 yards and one touchdown.
