College Football Best Bet: Georgia vs. Florida — Perfect Bounce-Back Spot for the Bulldogs
Sometimes the situation is just as important as the matchup itself, and that's exactly what we have Saturday when Georgia faces Florida in Atlanta.
Florida somehow managed to upset Texas 27-24 on the road in its last game, but we believe Georgia is a substantially better football team than Texas. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are coming off what could very well be their only regular-season loss, a 27-24 defeat against Auburn in which they lost the turnover battle 3-0.
That result doesn't change our opinion of Georgia. In fact, it creates an ideal bounce-back situation for one of the best teams in college football.
Georgia Is Much Better Than Its Last Result
Georgia's three-point loss to Auburn was largely a product of turnovers rather than a significant gap in talent or overall performance.
Quarterback Gunner Stockton committed three turnovers, including a late fumble that helped set up Auburn's game-winning field goal. Despite those mistakes, Georgia still had an opportunity to win the game.
Now the Bulldogs have had a bye week to regroup, and we expect a much sharper performance from Kirby Smart's team.
Florida deserves credit for upsetting Texas, but we're not willing to significantly upgrade the Gators based on one impressive result. Georgia is a much more complete team, and this matchup presents a considerably tougher challenge.
The Bulldogs have the advantages in overall talent, depth and consistency, and we expect those differences to become apparent over four quarters.
Florida's Injury Situation Adds to the Mismatch
The Gators enter this matchup with several important injury concerns, particularly on offense.
QB Aaron Philo (shoulder) — Named Starter: Philo will return after missing Florida's upset victory over Texas with an injury to his throwing shoulder. While his return provides stability at quarterback, he now faces a substantially tougher Georgia defense in his first game back.
QB Tramell Jones Jr. (undisclosed) — Questionable: Led Florida to its upset win over Texas but will return to a backup role.
WR Bailey Stockton (foot) — Doubtful: A potential loss to Florida's receiving depth.
RB Duke Clark (ankle) — Questionable: Adds uncertainty to the Gators' backfield depth.
LB Jaden Robinson (undisclosed) — Doubtful: A potential defensive absence against Georgia's offense.
WR Vernell Brown III (knee) — Probable: Expected to return after missing three games, providing Florida with a needed offensive boost.
Philo's return removes the uncertainty surrounding Florida's starting quarterback, but it doesn't eliminate the injury concerns. He'll be making his first appearance since injuring his throwing shoulder against South Carolina, and Georgia presents a considerably more difficult defensive matchup.
The Bulldogs rank among the nation's best defenses and should be capable of putting significant pressure on a Florida offense that struggled before its upset victory over Texas.
Georgia has injury concerns of its own, including safety KJ Bolden and running back Chauncey Bowens, who has been ruled out with a foot injury, but the Bulldogs have the depth to withstand those absences.
Atlanta Is Not a True Neutral Site
Another significant advantage for Georgia is the location.
This rivalry is traditionally played in Jacksonville, but Saturday's matchup moves to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
While technically designated a neutral-site game, we certainly don't view Atlanta as a neutral environment.
Georgia is playing in its home state, much closer to its campus and primary fan base, and we expect a substantial Bulldogs presence in the stadium.
That's another advantage for Georgia in a game where we already believe the Bulldogs are significantly superior.
The Perfect Spot for a Georgia Statement Win
We're laying 12.5 points, but the combination of superior talent, motivation, preparation and location makes this an attractive favorite. Florida is coming off an emotional road upset against Texas, while Georgia is looking to respond after a frustrating three-point loss to Auburn in which turnovers proved decisive.
We love backing elite teams in this type of bounce-back situation, particularly when their previous loss doesn't accurately reflect their overall quality. Georgia is the much better team, has had an extra week to prepare and gets a favorable venue against a Florida team whose starting quarterback is returning from a throwing-shoulder injury.
We expect the Bulldogs to respond with one of their better performances of the season and win comfortably.
Pick: Georgia -12.5 vs. Florida
