After a massive upset against the Louisville Cardinals and Heisman candidate Malik Cunningham, the Syracuse Orange suffered significant injuries to two starters.
Stefon Thompson will be out for the season and will attempt to redshirt this year. He suffered a left lower leg injury in their season opener against Louisville. Thompson became the first true freshman linebacker to start a season opener in 10 years, according to Cuse.com. In his 22 college games, he’s recorded 114 tackles, 9.0 sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles. Thompson’s impact on the Syracuse defense will be felt in all three phases.
The “glue guy” for Syracuse is Chris Elmore. In his college career, he’s played multiple positions, with his most recent two being fullback and tight end. He suffered a season-ending leg injury that might end his college career. Elmore is a redshirt senior, and it might not be possible to bring him back on the squad next season. He also missed the first four weeks of last season and had a season-ending injury in week eight. Syracuse will miss their “do it all” guy, which could hurt their chances against Uconn.
The Uconn Huskies took an 11-point loss to Utah State on Saturday after starting the game up 14 points. But, two injuries to their star player affected their downfall.
Roberson was named the starting quarterback Saturday morning after winning the quarterback competition. But he tore his ACL in the team’s second game of the season. This was going to be Roberson’s first year as the starting quarterback. True freshman ZionTurner will take the reins from Roberson in his absence. But, in the last game, he threw more interceptions than touchdowns. So, look for Uconn to lean on sophomore running back Nathan Carter.
The sophomore wideout caught a 13-yard touchdown pass in the first half of the team’s game against Utah State. After that pass, though, he was sidelined with a shoulder injury, which later was revealed to be a broken collarbone. He’s reportedly already had surgery and had a plate inserted to help heal the injury. As a freshman, Marion started all 12 games for the Huskies and led the team in receiving yards. An injured Huskies receiving core will make it hard for their freshman quarterback.
