Bears vs. Giants: Why Chicago Is the Play to Score First This Sunday
Last week’s Bears-to-score-first ticket went up in smoke almost instantly — ten chaotic seconds after Chicago won the coin toss and, for the first time all season, chose to defer. Cincinnati promptly housed the opening kickoff, and that was that. A gut punch, but not a signal to abandon the handicap.
This week, the same core logic that supported the bet is not only intact — it’s stronger.
Why the Bears Are Likely to Take the Ball This Time
Coaches tend to break tendency only when game flow or opponent matchups demand it. Last week’s surprise decision to defer fits that profile. Returning home against a struggling Giants defense, Chicago is far more likely to revert to its usual preference: take the ball, script the opening drive, and set the tempo.
After last week’s anomaly, the probability the Bears take the opening possession actually increases. Teams rarely break tendency twice in a row unless it works. Last week, it didn’t.
The Injury Edge Tilts Sharply Toward Chicago
New York enters this matchup battered on the back end:
CB Paulson Adebo (Giants’ No. 1 corner) is out.
S Jevon Holland is officially listed as questionable and trending the wrong direction.
That leaves the Giants thin at the two positions most vital to stopping scripted first drives: outside corner and deep safety. Chicago’s passing game has taken noticeable steps forward in early-game sequencing, and without Adebo and possibly Holland, the Giants’ coverage shells become far more vulnerable.
The Pick: Chicago Bears to Score First -140
Even after last week’s absolute dagger of a loss, the handicap remains sound:
Expect Chicago to take the ball, not defer.
Their scripted offense is trending up.
The Giants’ defensive injuries create mismatches right out of the gate.
Chicago’s offense vs. a compromised New York secondary is the clearest early-game edge on the board.
The chaos of last week was the exception, not the rule. The Bears have the matchup and the incentive to strike first at home on Sunday.
