Sam LaPorta’s status for the Detroit Lions’ regular-season opener is uncertain after he suffered a hip injury during a recent practice.

The Lions tight end has missed multiple practices this week. Head coach Dan Campbell said the team will rest him to allow the injury to “calm down.”

Will Sam LaPorta Play in Week 1?

Campbell was asked whether the hip injury could linger into the regular season but could not confirm LaPorta’s Week 1 availability.

“I don’t know,” Campbell said. “I feel like we’ll be OK, but I don’t know.”

Detroit has not provided a return timeline.

Sam LaPorta’s 2025 Back Surgery

LaPorta enters the 2026 season recovering from surgery to repair a fully herniated spinal disc that ended his 2025 campaign.

The injury developed from the cumulative effects of repeated hits before the disc fully herniated around Week 10 against Washington. LaPorta underwent surgery in November and finished the season on injured reserve.

He recorded 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns in nine games.
