UPDATE: Sam Darnold has been ruled out with a hip injury. The medical team was able to rule out a fracture, but Darnold will undergo an MRI on Thursday to determine the severity of the injury.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a hip injury on the fifth play of Wednesday's season opener against the New England Patriots.

Darnold was brought down on the play and limped off the field. He initially did not receive medical attention but later entered the medical tent before heading to the locker room.

The Seahawks initially listed Darnold as questionable to return with a hip injury, with Drew Lock replacing him at quarterback.

Pro Football Doc on Sam Darnold's Hip Injury

Based on video analysis, Pro Football Doc's primary concern is a posterior acetabular wall or rim fracture involving the back of Darnold's right hip socket.

The concern comes from the mechanism of the play, with Darnold's knee driven into the turf and the force traveling up his thigh and into the back of the hip.

Pro Football Doc noted that Darnold walking and limping off the field indicates this is not an unstable fracture or hip dislocation, but cautioned that a less severe fracture could still be possible.

“The bottom line is, at this point, the worry meter is high,” Pro Football Doc said. “The worry is for a posterior wall or acetabular rim fracture.”

X-ray results and additional evaluation will provide more clarity on the severity of the injury.
